Description
The Consolidated PB4Y-2 Privateer is a World War II and Korean War era patrol bomber of the United States Navy derived from the Consolidated B-24 Liberator. Wikipedia Many may not be familiar with WWII air communications in the Pacific theater where there were many smaller landmasses such as small islands dotting the map. Often air communications would only be on the bigger islands with larger populations. Once a plane left the base communications from the tower only reached as far as fifty miles. Since most missions were longer distances there would be no communications from the base for many miles which made flying much more difficult especially if there was bad weather ahead or one of the planes lost their orientation of where they were was common because of flying over a vast ocean with no landmarks. The percentage of pilots lost at sea and running out of fuel causing the plane to crash into the water was very high. Since there were few planes in the military that could fly low to spot a pilot in the water provided they could somehow get out of the plane and not be hit by the propellers, the chances of being found from a high flying plane was almost nil. It would be akin to looking for a needle in a haystack was the idiom my Father always used. The PB4Y could fly low and has a bigger fuel tank and would have a better chance of finding a downed plane and pilot although many bases in the Pacific did not have these planes.
