Description
Midlothian is the name of the first mines in Virginia. The Jewett-Bass House currently Crab Louie's Restaurant was built in 1745 by the Wooldrige brothers from Scotland. One brother came from East Lothian and the other from Wast Lothian, it became Midlothian located in Chesterfield, VA. Immigrants from Scotland, Wales and Ireland came to work the mines. Mines in the area supplied by the Richmond coal basin which is a rock formation supplied the first commercial mines in North America, the coal pits also supplied the furnace near the James River for manufacture of bullets and firearms for the Continental army during the Revolutionary War.
One of the residents, Abraham S. Wooldridge who served as a major during the War of 1812, was well regarded for his hospitality and the drivers using the Richmond-Lynchburg stagecoach would regularly use it as a refreshment stop for their passengers.
The most famous resident was Colonel William Wooldrige a Civil War hero who fought with Jeb Stuart's cavalry.
